Announcement: Ceremony Held to Celebrate Our Certified Sex Education Trainers

■  About This Project

The JaSiLe Foundation (Japan Sierra Leone Foundation), the local operating entity of the non-profit organization Alazi Dream Project Japan, launched a capacity-building program for teachers in Kenema, Sierra Leone, in January 2026 to strengthen school-based comprehensive sexuality education.

This initiative equips teachers with accurate knowledge and modern instructional methodologies, enabling them to conduct sustainable and impactful health education sessions. The primary goal is to prevent adolescent unintended pregnancies and reduce school dropout rates among youth.

As a pilot phase, 10 teachers from 5 selected schools participated in the training. Funded by the JICA Fund, the project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) to promote quality sex education in local schools.

■  Graduation and Certification Ceremony in Kenema

Following the intensive training course and final evaluation for our candidate sex education trainers, the JaSiLe Foundation hosted an official Graduation and Certification Ceremony in Kenema City to honor the teachers’ dedication and achievement.

The event gathered key stakeholders under one roof, including certified teachers, community elders, educational leaders, government representatives, and local partner organizations, all celebrating this critical milestone toward enhancing children’s health, rights, and education.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome address by Master of Ceremonies Mr. Augustine A. Sannoh, who introduced Alazi Dream Project Japan and JaSiLe Foundation’s broad initiatives, including reintegration support for young mothers and community advocacy on sexual and reproductive health.

Distinguished leaders from local administration and partner agencies shared inspiring words of encouragement:

Pledges from Key Institutions:
Representatives from the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU), the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police, Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), and the Ministry of Health (MoH) reaffirmed their strong commitment to collaborating on child protection and adolescent pregnancy reduction through sustainable school programs.

■  Project Achievements & Future Vision

Mr. Joseph Allieu Pidia, Manager of the JaSiLe Foundation, presented the project objectives, training outcomes, and future roadmap:

• Teacher Training Impact: 10 selected educators across 5 pilot schools successfully completed the rigorous training program. They are now certified as “Sex Education Ambassadors & Trainers” qualified to lead peer learning and deliver high-quality instruction. The program aims to scale up to additional schools across the district in upcoming phases.
• Organizational Footprint Since 2021: Since its inception, the foundation has facilitated the re-enrollment of 99 teenage mothers back into formal education and reached over 78,000 students across 166 primary, junior high, and senior secondary schools with critical health and rights education.

■  Certificate Presentation and Participants’ Voice

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal presentation of certificates to each teacher who successfully passed the final assessment.

Speaking on behalf of the graduating cohort, Ms. Josephine Tiangay Momodu expressed heartfelt gratitude to Alazi Dream Project Japan and JaSiLe Foundation, urging her fellow educators:

“Let us put the knowledge and techniques we gained here into practice in our classrooms, and work hand in hand to eliminate teenage pregnancy in our communities.”

■  Looking Ahead

To conclude the event, stakeholders reaffirmed their unified pledge: building a supportive ecosystem involving government ministries, schools, community leaders, parents, and NGOs to ensure every child has access to reliable guidance and safe learning environments.

Equipped with their official certificates, the 10 certified trainers are returning to their respective schools to lead direct classroom sessions. The JaSiLe Foundation team will continue to provide field support and conduct regular monitoring, ensuring that classes are conducted at least 3 times a year per group, maintaining small class sizes under 30 students.
